Library Development
Since 2005, BEADS has helped found three libraries at our schools in Kenya. Providing a constant flow of new library books to our schools is one of BEADS' top priorities.
BEADS has created two libraries at our partner schools -- one at Top Ride Academy and one at Lobarishereki Primary School.
Most rural students, their families and their teachers had never had access to books (other than textbooks) before. At this level, learning to read begins with learning how to open a book, and how to turn a page.
Currently the Top Ride library holds more than 10,000 books, making it the only library of its kind that we know of in Kenya, stocked with classic children's literature.
Over the years, BEADS Interns have painstakingly translated many beginning-reader books into Kimaasai, so that students can learn to read in their native language as well.
In addition to serving students, both libraries are open to the public, giving the entire community access to books.
Students in 5th grade and up -- including the teachers -- participate in our Great Literature program through book clubs. This promotes critical thinking through discussion groups for teachers and students.
The libraries at Top Ride and Lobarishereki are a tremendous source of pride for all who use them. Each year a BEADS intern is trained to work as the library at each school.
